GS1 Standards for data exchange

Interoperability, made possible by identification standards, data capture standards and interface standards for electronic communication, allows product information to flow seamlessly through the supply chain.

There are three types of data in the GS1 System that can be exchanged.

Master Data

Master data is a set of defined information attributes that describes a product, for example, its height, width and depth. The GS1 Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN) allows trading partners to access and exchange product master data in real-time. Product master data is entered into a GDSN-certified data pool.

Transactional Data

Transactional data includes business messages - such as invoices, orders and delivery notes - that are shared between partners throughout the supply chain. GS1 EDI provides global standards for electronic business messaging that allow automatic electronic transmission of agreed business data between trading partners. This automation ensures that the exchange is done in a rapid, efficient and accurate manner.

Event Data

Event data is a record of physical events. It explains what was identified, when the event happened and why, namely in business processes such as shipping, receiving and picking and is shared between partners. GS1 EPCIS (Electronic Product Code Information Services) is a standard that defines this information and allows it to be shared.
